Persian Silk Tree (Albizia julibrissin): Anti-Stress and Mood Elevating Herb

weight lossAlbizia julibrissin is a tree often referred to as mimosa. The tree belongs to the Leguminosae or legume family of plant, and has a long history of use in traditional medicine.  A number of trees within the Albizia group of plants can be used to treat stress and mood disorders, but mimosa is perhaps the best known and most widely known. Mimosa is wisely available as a dietary supplement. The usefulness of a number of species within the genus, suggests that common phytochemistry may exist between the various plants. In fact, evidence suggests that Albizia trees do have very similar phytochemistry and are useful in the treatment of similar disorders and diseases. Extracts of Albizia trees contain high amounts of antioxidants, including flavonoids, and this may explain some of their beneficial anti-stress and mood elevating effects. However, other phytochemicals including triterpenoid saponins, saponins and alkaloids may also contribute to the unique pharmacological effects of extracts of the plant.

Of the bioactive compounds isolated from Albizia julibrissin a group of triterpenoid saponins are most likely responsible for the anti-stress, anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects of the herb. These triterpenoid saponins include a group of chemicals called julibrosides. Extracts of Albizia julibrissin also contain other compounds that may reduce stress and help treat mood disorders, and these include a group of alkaloids called budmunchiamines, saponins, and a number of flavonoids, particularly the glycosides of quercetin, quercitrin and isoquercitrin.
