Fighting Stress and Fatigue with Melon Juice

Evidence suggests that stress causes an initiation of inflammatory processes in the brain, and this leads to free radical generation. These free radicals damage the delicate cell membranes of brain cells and this causes changes to mental function including low mood and mental fatigue. Foods that contain high levels of antioxidants may be beneficial at preventing these changes because they protect the brain cells from free radicals. Extramel is a supplement containing melon juice concentrate that is very high in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. Evidence suggests that supplements of Extramel may be beneficial to brain health because of these antioxidants. For example, in one study, researchers gave healthy volunteers a capsule containing 10 mg of melon juice concentrate which provided 140 IU of superoxide dismutase for 12 weeks. After this time, there was a significant reduction in the stress and fatigue experienced by the subjects compared to the control, suggesting that the supplement possessed a significant anti-stress effect.

Antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, lutein and curcumin may all reduce mental stress and fatigue. This may relate to the way antioxidants are needed in order to maintain normal brain function.
