Lecithin as a Mood Stabiliser

Mood stabilisers are compounds that can be useful in the treatment of extreme cases of mood disorders. Lithium is an example of a mood stabiliser that is used as a mainstream treatment for manic depression and magnesium is a nutrient with excellent mood stabilisation properties. A number of nutrients may act as effective mood stabilisers, with lecithin (phosphatidylcholine) being particularly well researched. Mood stabilisers may be effective against depression because they work to limit excessive intracellular and intercellular signaling and their associated second messenger systems, which is thought to be a cause of mood disorders such as bipolar disorder. As lecithin is safe it should be considered by those who wish to stabilise their mood. While food contains lecithin, supplements derived from soybeans are available which allow gram amounts of lecithin to be taken daily. This may be the prefered method of achieving the high intake of lecithin required for mood stabilisation to be effective.
