Asparagus racemosus is a herbal plant used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The plant has medicinal properties on account of the phytochemicals it contains, and these include steroidal saponins and flavonoids, both of which have been shown to protect from mood disorders. A number of studies have investigated the effects of Asparagus racemosus on animal models of mood in order to determine the mood elevating properties of the herb. For example, in one study rats received extracts of Asparagus racemosus root extract and were then subsequently exposed to experimental stress. The results of the study showed that the root extract of Asparagus racemosus had significant anti-anxiety effects. The anxiolytic effects were similar in magnitude to the anti-anxiety pharmaceutical drug diazepam and were shown to be elicited through the GABA system. Therefore Asparagus racemosus may have significant moo elevating effects in animals on account of its ability to interact with GABA receptors.
