Lagochilus plants are a group of plants that belong to the mint or Laminaceae family of plants. These plants are native to Central and Southern America and Eastern Asia. There are 44 species of plant in this group and many are used as herbal medicines because of the phytochemicals they contain. Many of these phytochemicals are secondary metabolites produced by the plants for reasons such as host defence, and over 150 phytochemicals have been identified in Logochillus plants to date. These phytochemicals include diterpenes, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, triterpenoids, iridoid glycosides, lignans, steroids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, volatile, non-volatile and aromatic compounds, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Some of these phytochemicals may explain the haemostatic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, cytotoxic, enzyme inhibitory, antispasmodic, hypotensive, sedative and psychoactive effects of the Lagochilus plants that have been evidenced in humans and animals.
