Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring compound used in the respiratory chain by cells. In this role it generates energy for the cell. Cells that require high amounts of energy, such as reproductive cells, have a high requirement for coenzyme Q10. As humans age their coenzyme Q10 synthesis rate declines, and this may cause decreases in the availability of energy. In men this may be related to dysfunction in a number of key areas, particularly reproductive cells. Studies have investigated the effects of coenzyme Q10 supplements on aspects of male fertility in clinical trials. For example, in one study, researchers administered 300 mg of coenzyme Q10 per day to iinfertile males for 26 weeks. The results of the study showed that the coenzyme Q10 was significantly able to improve sperm density and motility. The coenzyme Q10 treatment also causes significant reduction in luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone in the men, and a modest increase in testosterone levels, suggestive of a rebalancing effect on hormones.
