Centella Asiatica (gotu kola), Piper retrofractum (Javanese long pepper) and Curcuma domestica (turmeric) may possess aphrodisiac effects in males. This may relate to the way that the compounds interact with the physiological system of men. In one study a combination of these three herbs was significantly beneficial at improving the mating behaviour of rats. However, in terms of testosterone levels, there was no significant difference between the rats administered the herbs and the rats in the control group. Therefore it is likely that the effects of these herbs in terms of their aphrodisiac effects is through mechanisms other than via elevations in testosterone levels. These herbs are often used in cooking for their culinary taste and flavour and are considered safe to use as treatments for various disorders including fertility. Therefore as part of a healthy diet Centella Asiatica, Piper retrofractum and Curcuma longa may have significant beneficial effects in men with fertility problems.
