Glycine Supplements

Glycine is an amino acid that can be taken as a supplement in its free (non-protein) form. Roughly 20 % of the protein content of a human is in the form of glycine. Glycine is also the only proteinaceous amino acid in humans that is not stereoisomeric. Glycine is not essential and can be synthesised by cells from choline, serine, hydroxyproline, and threonine in the liver and kidney. Glycine is a precursor to a number of important biomolecules in humans including creatine, glutathione, haem, purines, and porphyrins. Evidence suggests that glycine may have a number of important health effects in humans and may have preventative effects against cardiovascular diseases, several inflammatory diseases, obesity, cancers, and diabetes. Evidence also suggests that glycine can enhance sleep and a number of neurological functions because it may be neuroprotective. Some evidence also suggests that glycine may play a role in reducing the risk of developing fatty liver disease and abdominal obesity.
