Garlic and Male Reproduction

Garlic is a medicinal plant with a number of beneficial health effects in humans and animals. Garlic is high in sulporous chemicals and these provide some of the health effects. However a number of other phytochemicals also contribute, particularly to the antioxidant effects of garlic. Some evidence suggests that garlic improves male reproductive function, but this may relate to the dose and the mode of administration. Certainly at normal food levels garlic appears to be beneficial to male reproductive health, as it is a great all round tonic and antioxidant herb that can generally improve all round health. However, some evidence also suggests that garlic may inhibit certain aspects of testicular function including the synthesis of testosterone and it may have a spermicidal effect in the testes. Therefore care should be taken when consuming garlic on a chronic basis and efforts should be made to assess the effect it may have on testicular function on a case by case basis. If negative effects are felt the garlic should be discontinued.
