Dandelion as a Liver Protective

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a plant that has a number of physiological effects in humans thanks to the phytochemicals it contains. One of the most well known of these effects is a significant diuretic effect that has been the subject of a number of research studies. However, a lesser known effect of the roots of dandelion is the liver protection it can provide to humans and animals. In animal models of liver toxicity, dandelion root is significantly able to protect the liver from further damage. It has been suggested that this protection may relate to the ability of the antioxidants within the root to protect the liver from oxidative stress, one of the main routes by which toxins can damage the liver. The dandelion root may also provide significant anti-inflammatory effects which can also reduce the pro-inflammatory pathways that can be activated by toxins during their processing in the liver. It is likely the antioxidants in dandelion also provide a general antioxidant protection for other tissues in the body.
