Alternative Sources of Flavonoids

Flavonoids are a group of phytochemicals that have some interesting health effects. Of particular note is the evidence that they act as antioxidants in humans and animals. Regular consumption of flavonoids may reduce the risk of developing certain Western lifestyle diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of flavonoids and perhaps the food groups that have been researched most extensively for their flavonoid content. However, a number of other sources exist and these may in some cases be superior sources of flavonoids. Tea contains high amounts of flavonoids, with green tea in particular being very high in the catechin variety of flavonoids. Herbs and spices are perhaps the best sources of flavonoids (tea is technically a herbal decoction), and herbs and spices have been evidenced to have some of the highest flavonoid levels of any food. Honey also contains flavonoids as they are present in the nectar collected by the bees and then concentrated in the honey.
