Are Energy Drinks a Cause of Mood Disorders?

Energy drinks are associated with a number of health problems. Most notably, energy drinks are associated with insulin resistance, weight gain and obesity. The detrimental health effects of energy drinks relate to the high sugar content in the diets of regular consumers, something which has been evidence dextensively. However, as well as physical health problems, regular energy drink consumption may lead to mental health problems, particularly mood disorders. For example, in one study, researchers investigated the effects of energy drinks on mental health by reviewing the published studies to date on this subject. The results of their review showed that for the majority of studies included in their search, there was a positive relationship between energy drink consumption and mental health problems. In other words, drinking energy drinks are associated with a higher risk of developing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. This supports other findings that show that energy drinks cause significant health problems.

Energy drinks may be particularly damaging to mental health because the sugar they contain can cause inflammation, and inflammation is a leading cause of dysfunction in the brain and central nervous system. Sugar also causes insulin resistance, and insulin resistance is associated with poor mental function.
