Boron For Athletes: Testosterone

Some evidence suggests that borion supplements may cause elevations in testosterone levels in animals and humans. However, this is controversial and studies disagree on the efficacy of boron supplementation for testosterone increases. One study on humans administered 10 mg per day of boron to male athletes for 4 weeks. During this time their steroid hormone production was measured. Supplementation with boron significantly increased blood levels of 17-β oestradiol. There was also an increase in testosterone observed, but this result was not statistically significant (meaning it could have been due to chance). Therefore it is unlikely that boron effectively increases testosterone levels, and in fact may increase oestrogen levels. Therefore although studies on rats show that boron may have some ability to raise levels of testosterone, in healthy male adult humans, these effects if present are only very mild. Physical activity, healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle devoid of stress remain the best ways to raise testosterone levels.
