Butea Monosperma: A Source of Flavonoids

Flavonoids are polyphenolic substances produced in plants. Flavonoids have been shown to be bioavailable in humans and animals. Flavonoids have medicinal effects and these effects can include beneficial changes to the brain, which may elevate mood. Butea monosperma is a plant that grows throughout India. Leaf, stem, bark, root and flower extracts of the plant have been shown to have medicinal effects, including anxiolytic effects in animals. It is thought that these effects are caused by the phytochemicals within the plant. The plant is rich in flavonoids, and these may therefore be responsible in part or in whole for the mood elevating effects. The flavonoids known to be present in Butea monosperma include a flavone (7,3,4-trihydroxyflavone), four flavanones, (butin, butrin, isomonospermoside and liquiritigenin), and three isoflavones (formononetin, afrormosin, and formononetin-7-O-b-D-glucopyranoside). In particular, flavones have been shown to have significant mood elevating effects.
