Any food must be fit for purpose prior to the expiry date on the label. This includes all food substances including supplements. Buying close to expiry supplements should therefore be safe, and there is no reason to assume this is the case in the short term. However, some supplements do degrade over time and as such these supplements may not be as fresh as they were when manufactured. Fish oil, vegetable oils, particularly polyunsaturated oils such as flax and other vitamin oils such as vitamin E may fall into this category of supplements to purchase as close to manufacturing as possible. However other supplements that are powders, particularly protein powders and vitamin supplements as powders should be relatively stable. Minerals are not able to degrade, being inorganic, and so these should be particularly stable. Herbs and spices are also relatively stable and can have long shelf lives. Buying supplements close to expiry can provide the opportunity to obtain discounts, which can lead to significant cost savings.
