Cassia tora Seed as an Anxiolytic and Antidepressant

Cassia tora is a native to the regions of Nepal, India and Pakistan. It is a herbaceous plant that grows to a height of around 2 meters. The plant is used medicinally in traditional medicine in these regions and its medicinal effects may relate to the phytochemicals within the seeds that include alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. These phytochemicals may have significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and that may explain their beneficial effects on mood. Administration of seed extracts from Cassia tora to mice have been shown to significantly reduce anxious behaviour when the mice are exposed to experimental stress. An antidepressant effect has also been observed by researchers. In addition a significant reduction in experimentally induced convulsions has been observed with Cassia tora, suggesting that the extract was affecting the GABA neurotransmitter system. Therefore seed extracts of Cassia tora appear to confer significant protection against the negative mood effects of stress.
