Convolvulus pluricaulis as an Antidepressant

Convolvulus pluricaulis is a traditional herbal remedy that is used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine. Evidence suggests that extracts of convolvulus pluricaulis are effective at modulating the central nervous system. Studies show that extracts of the plant may act a mood enhancers. For example, in one study, researchers administered various types of solvent extracts of Convolvulus pluricaulis to mice and assessed the behavioural changes in the animals. The results of the study showed that a chloroform fraction of Convolvulus pluricaulis was significantly able to reduce the depressive-like symptoms seen in the mice when exposed to experimental stress. What is more, these effects were comparable to the effects of the antidepressants imipramine and fluoxetine. In addition, the researchers provided evidence that the chloroform extract of Convolvulus pluricaulis was able to operate through interaction with the serotonergic, dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmitter systems.
