Cordyceps sinensis As A Herbal Supplement

Cordyceps sinensis is an edible fungus belonging to the family Clavicipitaceae. Cordyceps sinensis has been researched and shown to have specific health effects as well as more general well being effects. The fungus grows naturally in the Tibeten Plateau of the Himalayas where it is used as a tonic and nutritional supplement. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses Cordyceps sinensis as a treatment for a number of ailments and it has been investigated for its adaptogenic, aphrodisiac, antioxidant, anti-aging, neuroprotective, nootropic, immunomodulatory, anti-cancer and hepatoprotective effects. In Chinese medicine the fungus is called Dong Chong Xia Cao. Bioactive compounds are found in the fruiting bodies of Cordyceps sinensis (the mushrooms) as well as other parts of the organism. The bioactive principles are thought to include nucleosides, exo-polysaccharides, sterols and proteins. Of the nucleotides present the main constituents are thought to include adenosine and cordycepin.
