Crinum giganteum is commonly called the large African Lily, and it is a flowering plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae or amaryllis family of plants. The large African lily is characterised by large spreading green leaves and a large white flowers. The plant is native to northern parts of Nigeria. The plant produces a bulb that can weight up to 2 kg and this bulb is reported to have a number of medicinal effects including a strong sedative activity. For example, in one study, researchers investigated the sedative properties of the large African lily by administering bulb extracts to mice. The results of the study showed that bulb extracts of the plant had significant sedative properties. However, the researchers did not isolate or identify the compounds responsible for this activity. It is through that the sedative activity of the plant is due to the presence of certain alkaloids within the plant tissue, however in large doses these alkaloids may be poisonous and so care must be taken when using this plant medicinally.
