Evidence suggests that oxidative stress and inflammation are major causes of depression and anxiety. There are a number of factors that can contribute to the development of oxidative stress and inflammation, but poor diet and stress have been identified as two of the major components necessary. Oxidation and inflammation can lead to the development of depression and anxiety because they cause changes to the normal brain chemistry such that neurotransmission becomes imparied in the areas of the brain associated with mood. A healthy diet has consistently been identified as being pivotal to the treatment of anxiety and depression, and some researchers have now suggested that depressed individuals should receive dietary guidance in order to help alleviate their condition. One way that dietary guidance can help individuals with depression is through improvements to the health of the gut, something which has been shown to improve the overall health of the individual through the modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation.
