Dietary Polyphenols as Anti-Ageing Phytonutrients

Polyphenols are phytochemicals contained within all plant tissue. They are generated by plants as part of the natural metabolic processes in plants. Consuming plants supplies polyphenols to animals and humans, where many of them are bioavailable. Dietas rich in fruits and vegetables are rich in polyphenols and this is considered to be one of the reasons that such diets are healthy. Polyphenols and their metabolites when absorbed have antioxidant properties and this may protect animal and human tissue from damaging free radicals and the oxidative stress they produce. Free radicals are thought to be involved in the development of aging, and diets high in antioxidants may slow this process. Anti-aging diets therefore consist of foods high in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables. Herbs and spices are particularly rich in polyphenols which explains their very high antioxidant capacities, and including herbs and spices in the direct may significantly delay the ageing process if consumed as part of a healthy diet.
