Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia

Phytochemistry: echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia contain a large number of phytochemicals. Some of the most interesting are a group of polysaccharides than may have immune enhancing effects. The polysaccharides with immune stimulating effects include fructogalactoxyloglucans and one acidic arabinogalactan. Caffeic acid derivatives including cichoric acid, glycoproteins and alkamides are also present in the echinacea.

Uses: Echinacea has anti-inflammatory and immune stimulatory effects. Externally extracts of echinacea can be used to treat wounds and insect bites. When chewed the extracts can provide relief from toothache and a sore throat. When extracts are taken internally, there is a significant immune stimulating effect that can have beneficial effects particularly against upper respiratory tract infections.
