Elderberry As An Immune Enhancer?

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is considered to have significant health effects. In particular elderberry may have the ability to enhance the immune system. Elderberry has traditionally been used as a protective herb against the influenza virus and in this regard a number of studies have confirmed the effectiveness of the herb. For example, in one study, researchers investigated the effects of an elderberry extract called Sambucol on the immunity of a group of individuals living in an agricultural community during an influenza outbreak. Subjects were administered either Sambucol, containing elderberry juice, raspberry extract, glucose, citric acid and honey, or a placebo for 3 days after symptoms of influenza were identified. The results of the study showed that within 6 days of starting treatment, improvements in symptoms were seen in 93.3 % of the subjects taking the Sambucol, whereas in the control group improvements were seen in only 91.7 % of the subjects. Therefore Sambucol may confer significant immune enhancing effects.

Evidence suggests that immune enhancing effects of elderberry extracts may stem from the high concentrations of polyphenolic substances in the herb. Polyphenols present include phytochemicals from the flavonoid class, including flavones, and flavonols. These polyphenols also give elderberry significant antioxidant properties, and this may contribute significantly to the health effects of the herb.
