Glutamine is an amino acid that may have some benefits when taken as a supplement. The prolonged physical activity that typifies exercise causes an increased requirement for nutrients that support muscle function, and glutamine may fulfill that role. Prolonged exercise may reduce the plasma levels of glutamine, and this may cause a significant increase in the requirement for glutamine in the diet. Evidence suggests that supplements of glutamine may raise blood levels of glutamine and this may improve immunity. However, glutamine does not alter some of the aspects of the immune system that are affected by exercise and so the relationship is not straightforward. However, for glutamine to show it beneficial effects on the immune system high doses are needed. Studies have shown that 20 to 30 grams of glutamine is safe, but it is not clear if this amount is practical or cost effective in the long term. Therefore while glutamine is theoretically interesting its practical applicability remains in doubt.
