Glycine and Cysteine for Glutathione Synthesis?

Cellular glutathione levels are associated with health. As people age their glutathione levels drop and this is associated with increased mortality. That is not to say that low levels of glutathione are the cause of mortality, but higher levels are associated with better health, which also declines with age. There are a number of ways to increase cellular levels of glutathione and each one of these has its own merits. One way that is not often discussed is by supplying the amino acids that are used by the cell to synthesise glutathione. For example, evidence suggests that supplementation with glycine and cysteine, two of the three amino acids required to synthesise glutathione (the other being glutamate), is an effective way of increasing cellular levels of glutathione. In one study this method was shown to be significantly effective at raising cellular levels of glutathione as measured by the glutathione content of red blood cells. Therefore amino acid supplements seem able to reverse the age related decline in glutathione levels.
