Goji berries have recently become popular within the health food industry. Originally called wolberries or boxthorn (Lycium barbarum), the plant belongs to the Solanaceae family of plants. The wolfberry has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia. Goji berries can also refer to berries from Lycium chinense, a very closely related species to Lycium barbarum. The plant is also known as kuko in Japan and gugija in Korea. Goli is thought to be a name that derives from the Chinese name for the plant which is gouqi. Gogi berry fruits are rich in carbohydrates like all berries, and this content changes as the fruit ripens. In addition, goji berry fruit may contain a number of carotenoids, including β-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin, as well as vitamin C. In addition, the fruits contain polyphenols, which are antioxidants used by the plant to protect from environmental damage. A number of terpenoids may also be present including linalool, which is present in the volatile components of the fruit.
