Creatine is a compound that is found naturally in meat. This is because creatine can be found in animal muscle tissue as creatine phosphate (also called phosphocreatine). When animal muscle (meat) is consumed the creatine phosphate is absorbed and can accumulate in the consumer’s own muscle tissue. In muscle creatine phosphate acts as an energy store. When muscles contract they use energy that comes from the removal of a phosphate from molecules of adenosine triphosphate. This causes the formation of adenosine diphosphate. This adenosine diphosphate energy can be recycled to adenosine triphosphate by the reattachment of a phosphate, and this phosphate can come from creatine phosphate. Increasing the creatine phosphate content of muscle therefore increases the ability of the muscle to perform work, particularly if the work is of high intensity for short durations. Taking creatine as a supplement has been shown to significantly increase the creatine phosphate content of the muscle.
