Alcohol is chemically called ethanol. Ethanol is present in a number of commercially available drinks and is made through the fermentation of vegetables or fruit. Alcoholic drinks are easy to make, cheap, and readily available. Alcoholic drinks have played a major part in traditional diets for all of recorded history and undoubtedly there are considerations to take when incorporating them into a healthy diet. One of the major considerations of alcoholic drinks is the way that they are moderated. Small amount of alcohol may have beneficial effects, particularly on the cardiovascular system. Red wine for example has been evidence to confer significant health effects on those that consume it regularly. However, as intake increases, negative aspects of alcoholic drinks become apparent, because ethanol is toxic to the cells of the body in high concentrations. Negative health effects include weight gain, fatty liver deposits, insulin resistance, liver damage and eventually liver failure.
