Tea is a healthy tea because it contains high amounts of antioxidants. The antioxidants in tea are dependent on the type of tea consumed. Green tea contains mainly flavonoids of the flavan-3-ol class called catechins. Catechins are known to have a number of beneficial health effects including cardioprotective, weight loss and anti-cancer effects. Black tea contains mainly oxidised versions of the catechins including theaflavins and thearubigins. Consuming both black and green tea makes sense because the antioxidants are different, and although both are healthy, they may have slightly different health effects in humans. However, brands and types of tea may also have slightly different antioxidant profiles and therefore switching brands, or consuming multiple types of tea makes sense as it provides a range of antioxidants in different ratios. These antioxidant may have synergistic effects, and by taking advantage of this synergism, a greater health effect may be evidence over the long-term.
