Is the Aroma of Herbal Tea Relaxing?

The reason for the health effects of herbal tea have been well researched and this may include the presence of high numbers of polyphenol antioxidant compounds in most herbal teas. Herbal teas vary in their phytochemical content, but generally they are high in antioxidants and low in energy. The aroma of herbal teas may also produce certain physiological changes that may provide health effects. Kuromoji is a deciduous shrub of the Lauraceae family, and the leaves and stems of the plant can be made into a tea. In one study researcher assessed the effects of the aroma of Kuromoji tea on human subjects and found that the aroma was able to stimulate saliva production in the oral cavity, indicative of activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, this indicates a high degree of relaxation in the individual, and this is often called the rest and digest branch of the nervous system. Kuromoji tea may therefore potentially have positive health effects on account of its aroma.
