Is Tinned Fish a Healthy Food?

Fish is considered a healthy food. A number of lines of evidence support fish as part of a healthy diet. In particular, fish has been shown to be beneficial to cognition, able to inhibit neurodegeneration and is a good source of protein which may benefit the immune system and the regeneration of skeletal muscle. Some fish also contains long chain fatty acids and these may have significant anti-inflammatory effects. Canning (or tinning) is a process by which fresh food is preserved through encapsulation of the food in a sterile metal container. Many tins contain plastic linings and the metal and plastic may have detrimental long term effects on health. Studies suggest that tinned food is not as healthy as fresh food, and this is because nutrients can degrade during the canning process, and may also degrade over time whilst in the can. However, studies that have looked specifically at tinned fish, show that it retains much of its beneficial effects and can be considered part of a healthy high quality diet.
