Lithium as Part of a Healthy Diet

Lithium is a mineral that is controversial because of the fact that at high doses it may be toxic. However, the toxicity of lithium relates to the dose, and as with any nutrient, the optimal intake should be calculated based on requirements. Lithium is highly effective at treating a number of mental disorders including manic depression, bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder. One of the main problems surrounding the use of lithium however is the form in which it is ingested. Pharmaceutical preparations are in the form of lithium citrate or lithium carbonate, and these forms may be poorly absorbed to the cells of the body where it is needed, which necessitates a higher dose, and this then leads to toxicity problems. One solution is to take a more absorbable form of the mineral. In this respect lithium orotate may be transported more freely into the cells, and this allows a lower total intake of the mineral. Another benefit of lithium oratate is that it may be effective at relieving the symptoms of migraine headaches.
