Red meat is often chastised and many claim it is detrimental to one’s health. However, as with all great propaganda, it is easier to sell a lie if you mix it with an ounce of truth. The first problem with the labelling of red meat as detrimental to the health is that it takes no account of how much you consume. The second main problem is that it makes no consideration of the type of red meat you eat, where it originated from, what has been added to it, how the animals were treated, the person’s state of health or what was consumed along with it. Considering these factors creates a situation whereby it is simply not possible to make any statement about the health effects of red meat, good or bad, without qualifying the details on a case by case basis. For example, would someone with a severe iron deficiency not obtain significant health benefits from consuming red meat to reverse that deficiency? Would a starving individual not derive great health benefits from consuming large proportions of fatty red meat? Cearly the statement is nonsense and consuming red meat can be detrimental or beneficial depending on the circumstances at hand.
