Red Wine and Anxiety

Resveratrol is a polyphenolic substance found in large amounts in red wine. Resveratrol is associated with a number of health effects and this has been linked to its antioxidant effects. As antioxidants are protective of mood disorders, it has been suggested that resveratrol may benefit those with anxiety. In animal studies evidence suggests that resveratrol may have anxiolytic effects. For example, in one study, experimentally induced anxiety was ameliorated by administration of resveratrol. These results support other data that show that polyphenols in food may have beneficial neuroprotective effects and may be beneficial at preventing mood disorders. Red wine is a rich source of resveratrol and so consuming red wine as part of a healthy diet may contribute to preventing deteriorations in mental health. Although the alcohol component of red wine is considered damaging in excess, in moderate amounts this may also contribute to improved mental health through improvements in general health and fitness.
