Salvia hypoleuca and an Anxiolytic Herb

Salvia hypoleuca is a plant that grows native to parts of Iran. The plant is used as a traditional medicine for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and calimitve effects. Evidence suggests that the phytochemicals within the plant confer central nervous system effects to those who consume it. A number of animal studies have investigated the mood elevating effects of the plant using experimental models. In one such study, researchers administered extracts of Salvia hypoleuca to mice and exposed the animals to experimental stress. The results of the study showed that the mice were significantly affected by the herbal extract. In particular, the researchers observed significant behavioural effects that could be inferred to be caused by reductions in the anxiety experienced by the animals. Therefore Salvia hypoleuca appears to have mood elevating effects which include those of an anti-anxiety nature. Comparisons of Salvia hypoleuca with diazepam show that the effects can be broadly considered similar.
