Shilajit as a Nutritional Supplement

Shilajit is a blackish substance that exudes from layers of rock in various places around the world. Nutritional sources of shilajit often originate from the Himalayas, but other sources include Norway, Russia and Tibet. Shilajit is a mixture of a number of organic and inorganic substances, which include a number of plant metabolites and microbial substances which may come from ancient organic life. Traditional medicine claims that Shilajit is a rejuvenate and an adaptogen, and many studies have suggested that these claims are justified. The main content of shilajit is paleohumus and this accounts for around 80 to 85 % of the content. Paleohumus is the remains of plants that have been compressed by the rocks and then chemically altered by heat and pressure. One of the main components of shilajit from the Himalayan region is an organic acid called fulvic acid, that may confer many of the health properties of the substance, and which makes up around 20 % of organic components.
