The Forgotten Factor In Good Health: Gut Health

The evidence that a balanced diet can improve health is now overwhelming. In fact, diet is likely the single biggest factor that can affect a person’s health and wellbeing. Many foods have been identified that can cause ill health, and many have also been identified that can cause beneficial health effects. One factor that is often not considered when discussing diet and health is the way that foods can affect the microbiota in the gut. Many of the foods considered to improve health are beneficial because they can cause the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. These foods are either food for the bacteria, or inhibit the growth of detrimental strains. In contrast, foods that stimulate the growth of detrimental species of bacteria are the foods that tend to cause ill health. The health of the gut is therefore pivotal to general health, and consuming foods such as fruits and vegetables, yoghurt and whole grains, that can stimulate the growth of a beneficial microbiota profile, can significantly reduce the risk of many diseases.
