Nutritional supplements are useful tools that can help an individual attain optimum health. There are a huge range of supplements available, ranging from vitamins and minerals to phytochemicals, through antioxidants, proteins, essential fats and other niche nutrients such as carnitine, creatine and ginseng. Choosing a supplement can be difficult and it is not always clear if a benefit will be obtained until after commencement. However, it should be remembered that supplements are just that. They should be considered something that is added to an already high quality diet to enhance health further. They should supplement a healthy diet. What supplements are not, is a substitute for a healthy diet, and generally, save for a few supplements that could be classed as food, they should not be relied upon to give a base level of health except in rare and special circumstances. For example, vitamin and mineral supplements should only be taken after a base level of health has been obtained through a good quality diet.
