The Psychology of Weight Loss: Disinformation Agents

whey proteinSelf education is the key to success in any field, and this is true for nutrition. In order to become successful at fat loss there must be a certain amount of self education of matters pertaining to body composition improvement. Learning a certain amount about nutrition, health , exercise and diets will aid immensely in accomplishment of goals because it will allow the individual to make the right decisions, and this will greatly speed progress and prevent set backs. There are many good sources of information, and these can include both books and the internet. Reading widely of such material is recommended, but a certain amount of discernment is required because informations should never be taken at face value. Sources of information from those without formal training and qualifications should not be dismissed as many self taught nutritionists exist and provide highly useful material. Likewise, just because someone had a medical degree or a PhD does not make them an expert in nutritional matters.

Beware the disinformation agents. Disinformation comprises of large amounts of truth, with a small amount of lies. The truth gives the disinformation agent an air of credibility, and this lulls the individual into a false sense of security. Apply proper discernment to all information provided, and always question the motive.

Those with poor knowledge or a lack of understanding can easily be identified and avoided. However, more insidious are the disinformation agents who infest the nutritional arena with their snake oil lies. Disinformation agents can be particularly problematic as their intention is to deliberately mislead the individual, but they often give an air of authority with this deceit. Disinformation agents will often tell a large amount of truth, and then mix in lies in order to deceive an individual, and this is often in the pursuit of making money through selling diet programmes, supplements, or both. The false energy paradigm, which states that fat loss can be obtained simply be limiting energy intake and performing physical activity, is perhaps the most common piece of disinformation that is perpetually repeated in the mainstream, and it has cause many millions of people to be unable to improve their body composition. However, there are many other examples of disinformation.

The books and the internet can be great sources of information. But use discernment when analysing the information that they contain. Sometimes the best lies are the biggest lies. Just because the majority believes something to be true, does make it the truth.

The disinformation agent and their disinformation is dangerous because the lie that they sell you will often be peppered with truth. In fact, there can sometimes be a large amount of truth, with just a small lie. The diet industry uses large amounts of truth to suggest that what they sell is beneficial and will ultimately aid the individual. However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and the high failure rate of such diets attests to their almost universal lack of basis in science, and this is not widely reported. To cover themselves, when an individual fails to improve their body composition, they will simply state that the individual did not follow their diet correctly and if they would just try again, but this time a little harder, then success awaits. This convinces the individual to part with more money, because the lies they are told sound convincing, and an air of authority on these matters is given by the company or individual. Avoiding such disinformation will greatly increase the chance of obtaining success at fat loss.
