Evidence suggests that the foods we eat impact our health. There are a number of groups of foods that have been researched for their health effects and eating more of these foods can significantly improve health and quality of life. It is sometimes hard to quantify these food groups in terms of their health effects, but a number of them do stand out in terms of their overall benefits. Fruits and vegetables are two groups with perhaps the most research linking them to positive health effects. Both fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and this may explain their beneficial effects. Nuts and seeds are two more groups that have consistently been shown to have positive health effects, again perhaps because of the antioxidants they contain. Another group of beneficial foods that are rich in antioxidants are the spices. All of these food groups have one thing in common, and that is that they originate from plants. This emphasises the importance of a high plant based diet as a cornerstone to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
