Too Little Of A Good Thing?

Most people are aware that the body requires vitamins and minerals in order to be able to function. Many people take a multivitamin and mineral supplement for this reason. However, there are other essential nutrients that are not vitamins or minerals that are also needed in the correct dosages in order to maintain health. The essential fatty acids are one such nutrient, and many people do not adequately maintain a healthy intake. Omega 6 fatty acids are generally replete within any Western diet, but the same diet provides virtually no omega 3 fatty acids. This has a consequence for health because omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids are needed in a precise ratio to provide health. For every 3 grams of omega 6 fatty acids, there should be an intake of approximately 1 gram of omega 3 fatty acids. Increasing omega 3 intake can therefore provide significant health benefits as it rebalances this key ratio. Good sources of omega 3 fatty acids include fatty fish, linseeds, walnuts and green leafy vegetables.
