Too Much Sugar?

Table sugar is chemically called sucrose. Sucrose is made up of one molecule of fructose and one molecule of glucose. Studies consistently show that high intakes of sugar in the diet are detrimental to the health, largely because of the fructose component. One of the worst food groups with regard to the sugar content is soft drinks. Soft drink are particularly detrimental because not only do they contain high amounts of sugar, but they also deliver that sugar in a liquid form. Energy drinks are perhaps the worst type of soft drink because they can contain upwards of 50 grams of sugar per 500 mL. When consumed, this energy is rapidly delivered to the liver, which overloads the ability of the liver to store or oxidise the energy. The result is the formation of triglycerides, mainly from fructose. These triglycerides are transported directly to adipose tissue for storage and contribute to raised levels of blood triglyceride levels. Regular consumption of soft drinks may therefore be a significant cause of weight gain.
