Why There is No Correct Water Intake

Recommendations for water intake vary considerably depending on the source of the information. There are a number of reasons for this, the most obvious being that no one water intake can satisfy everyone in all circumstances. The amount of water someone needs in a day is dependent on the amount of activity they do and the ambient temperatures. As the activity level increases and the temperature rises, the amount of water required increases, mainly because water is the primary cooling system of the body directly and indirectly (through the blood) and therefore more heat causes a greater turnover of water. Another factor to consider is how much water is consumed through food. Certain vegetables and fruits are very high in water and consuming more of these foods causes the amount of water to be consumed to decrease. Another factor is how much caffeine is consumed. Caffeine is a diuretic and drinking more tea, coffee or cacao causes diuresis, and this will significantly increase water intake requirement.
